In 1957, in a town where your future almost seem destined, conformity being the norm, you have to be what everyone expects of you. Nations are pushing further than ever, and The Soviet Union just successfully launched Sputnik 1. While everyone in this town is looking underground, a small group of boys have their eyes on the sky.
Though their education system is failing them, with the support of one teacher these boys research and teach themselves what they need to know to design and fly rockets. These boys denied their upbringing, and their hometown to show that anything is possible and that your dreams are worth pursuing.
Failed attempt after failed attempt, these boys do not give up on their dreams. Thank God, these boys support each other because the support from their families is for the most part lacking. Even when their dream seems to be slipping away, they continue to push forward. Gaining support of the town, the spectacle of their home made rockets, pulls in more and more attention. Too much it seems as the boys are blamed for an accident that seems to be caused by a rocket.
Everything seems to be lost, but one thing that in history that has always prevailed is human determination. Then disaster, the same determination that fueled the rockets, now fuels the need to take care of family. But a dream never dies, success comes and the clearing of a name. Sometimes doing what you love, can be the best thing you can do in life. It goes without saying, you should always follow your dreams, always shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you'll end up among the stars.
