Reboots and Remakes

The all too familiar lie surrounding reboots is that they are "An updated take for a new generation." This can't be further from the truth. However, this is true when talking about remakes or retellings.

The problem with reboots is that you are taking already pre-established stories and taking minor existing concepts to create all new original stories....with the same names as the originals. Now, sometimes this works. However on almost every occasion it doesn't.

Too reboot is to start over. Too remake or too retell is to make over again or to tell again. There is a plethora of examples proving this.

Some examples are...

-Ghostbusters (1984) vs Ghostbusters (2016)
-Tomb Raider (2001) vs Tomb Raider (2018)
-Fantastic 4 (2005) vs Fantastic 4 (2015)
-TMNT (1990) vs TMNT (2014)

The true purpose of a reboot is to outpreform its original predecessor with a new story. However we have seen that on almost, if not, every occasion the original film always out does the reboot. There is only about a 35% chance that reboots can actually do better than the originals.

The purpose of a remake is to tell the same story over again in a different light than the original. Now whether the film is successful is usually a 50/50 toss up. However same as before, no matter how amazing the remake is it can never live up to their original predecessor.

However there are reboots that have done exceptionally better than their predecessors. One example is Spider-Man.

While yes Toby McGuire's adaptation of Spider-Man was fun. The fact of the matter is that they were terrible films. The best of the trilogy being 'Spider-Man 2'. The only real reason people enjoy the McGuire trilogy is because of the nostalgia.

Every now and again there will be a reboot that will actually be incredible, and obviously far superior to its predecessor. But sadly, there are those individuals who will fight tooth and nail and give you a million reasons why the original version is superior. They will defend these terrible films until their death.
